A few months ago we talked about Wills and the importance of having one. If you missed it, take a moment to check it out. However, today we would like to talk about a different type of Will and the importance of it. That Will is called a Living Will.
Simply put, a Living Will is a legal document that provides your loved ones with your final medical wishes in the event you are in a terminal condition, permanent coma or persistent vegetative state, and there is no realistic hope of significant recovery. With it you can be specific on if you want to use a feeding tube, resuscitation, and any other medical procedures that could help prolong your life.
By having a Living Will and indicating your wishes, you are providing your loved ones what they need to make the difficult decisions, in the event you can’t make it. It takes the burden off of your loved ones shoulders and gives you control over the options for your end-of-life care.
While you may think now is not the time to worry about a Living Will, the truth is there is no time like the present. You never know when something may happen that leaves you in a condition where you are not able to make those major decisions by yourself.
An example of where a Living Will would have been very beneficial for the family, is the Terri Schiavo’s case. Terri Schiavo was only 26 years old when she experienced cardiac arrest which left her severely brain-damaged and in a vegetable state. She had no Living Will, which in return led to a seven year legal battle between her husband and parents over ending her life. If she would have had a Living Will in place, this could have been avoided.
So, as you can see, no matter your age, a Living Will is very much important. Here at, Sher & Associates, we can help you create your Living Will. Be sure to give us a call today to schedule your appointment.
